Syllabus

English Conversation 2
2014, Spring Semester
Jason Rea
GEC Faculty Office 314

Aims of the Course

By the end of the course, students will be able to demonstrate improvement in Speaking, Listening, and Writing skills.  This will be accomplished through Role Plays, Speaking Activities, Group Discussions, Writing Assignments, and Listening Activities.  Special attention will be paid to preparation for Job Interviews and tests such as TOEIC, TOEIC Speaking, TOEFL, and OPIC.

Grades

Every semester diligent, hard-working students receive a C+.

KoreaTech’s grading policy dictates that up to 35% of students receive an A and that up to 75% of students receive an A or a B.

Grades will be calculated as follows:

            40%  Mid-Term Exam
            40%  Final Exam
            20%  Homework, Attendance, Participation

Exams

Both the Mid-Term and Final Exams will consist of Multiple Choice Questions and a Speaking Test.  The Multiple Choice Questions will account for 33% of the score and the Speaking Test will account for 66% of the score.  Both parts of the Exams will come from topics and material that we have covered or discussed in class.  Before each Exam I will notify students of the exam contents.

Homework

Writing Assignments will help evaluate student progress.

Listening Assignments, Reading Assignments, and Videos will help students prepare for Group Discussions.  I may even ask you to watch a movie!

Attendance

More than 4 absences = Failure of the course.
If you are late 4 times I will count that as 1 absence.

Attendance is important.  However, I realize that students sometimes get sick and that, for other reasons such as military duties and funerals, absences are unavoidable.  Please bring some documentation to prove the necessity of your absence, such as a note from a doctor.  It is ultimately up to me to decide whether an absence is excusable.  Please send me an email or come and talk to me about your absences.  I also recommend finding a fellow classmate who can inform you of what you have missed in class.

Participation

It is important that students be active participants in class.  Do your best.
